New Technology Zone of the IPN Branch Office in Olsztyn

On February 16, the ceremonial opening of the new Branch Office of the Institute of National Remembrance took place in Olsztyn. This is another step in the development of educational and commemorative activities carried out in the region. The headquarters houses the first New Technology Zone in northern Poland, where visitors have access to games and applications developed by the new technology division. The Branch Office is located at 19 Okrzei Street.

Inauguration of the New Headquarters of the Branch Office of the Institute of National Remembrance

The official inauguration was attended by representatives of regional and local authorities, uniformed services, the academic community, veterans, and school youth. After the symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony, invited guests took part in a panel discussion entitled “Polish historical policy and the aggressive actions of Soviet and Russian special services against the independence and sovereignty of Poland”, featuring Dr. hab. Karol Polejowski, Col. Andrzej Jawor, and Brig. Gen. Andrzej Kowalski.

During the event, Dr. hab. Karol Polejowski presented the Medal Reipublicae Memoriae Meritum to Małgorzata Siergiej, Paweł Letko, and Piotr Łukasz Patejuk. This distinction is awarded to individuals particularly deserving in cultivating the memory of events and heroes from the years 1917–1990 and in supporting the educational, scholarly, and publishing activities of the IPN.

Olsztyn is now home to the first New Technology Zone of the IPN in north-eastern Poland. It is open to all visitors, and the games and applications available there can also be downloaded for free at home.

The space is equipped with desktop computer stations as well as VR (virtual reality) stations. Please note that VR equipment is intended for users aged 13 and over. For younger visitors, computer games and applications remain available.

In the zone, you will find the following games and applications:

  • “Warsaw Rising” – a strategy game set during the Warsaw Uprising. Your task is to complete missions, help the fighting city of Warsaw, and lead soldiers through all 63 days of combat;

  • “Testimony of Help” – a cinematic VR experience. The project tells the story of the Blessed Ulma family, who sheltered Jews during World War II. The story is presented from the perspective of six-year-old Basia, the daughter of Józef and Wiktoria Ulma;

  • “Szybowcowa ’87” – a VR application that transports you into an apartment in a communist-era block of flats in Wrocław, which served as the headquarters of a secret printing house of “Fighting Solidarity.” There you will duplicate successive copies of underground independence press or eavesdrop on radio conversations of the Security Service (SB) officers;

  • “Aviators” – an educational adventure game about Polish heroes participating in aerial combat during World War II. The title includes arcade elements and logic puzzles. Additionally, the game features a journal module presenting historical knowledge referenced in the storyline;

  • “The Cyphers Game” – a production based on source materials and composed of historical artifacts. The missions in the game are documented historical events, and each character has a different task crucial to the outcome of the battle. The action takes place during the Polish–Bolshevik War, at the end of 1920.
